How to go about becoming a volunteer fire fighter? Do they get paid anything?

Posted by admin on January 24th, 2010 and filed under volunteer fire | 5 Comments »

I’m gonna join the local Volunteer Firefighters, which is right down the street from me, I’m not doing it for the money, I just want something to do and to make some new friends since I graduated last May and quit my job last July. I think it will only benefit me in the long run to at least have the experience so I want to know do they accept everyone, since I don’t have a record or anything, and do they get any money?

The amount of people they accept will depend on their need for more people. Do they go out with fully manned apparatus? In my area, if you can pass a basic medical you’ll be accepted. Then it’s up to you to get your ff certification so you can actually fight fire.
When I volunteered we were given $5 per call and residents of the city were given a property tax break.
It is a great way to make friends, get involved in your community and learn some cool stuff.
Have fun.

We are a small volunteer fire dept. that needs to figure out how to raise money to repair equipment and to have some operating funds any info would be appreciated.

Our local volunteer department does an annual fundraiser where they have guys stand at the traffic lights and hold a fireman’s boot for people to donate into. I donate every time they do it.

can my friend become a volunteer fire fighter?

my friend mike is really into volunteer fire fighter and hopefully becoming a paid fire fighter but he has been arrested over a year ago for possesion of marijuana and later on a dwi and with the possesion charge he got PBJ for 6 months and he completed that, and with the dwi the officer never showed up to court so it was droped.
thanks in advance!!

The answer actually depends upon your local jurisdiction and laws. For many jurisdictions, the fire department will conduct a background check, but can decide for themselves if they want to accept a particular candidate. Other jurisdictions might be forbidden by law to accept certain candidates.

There’s no harm in volunteering and seeing if he is accepted or not. However, note that the requirements for paid firefighters are probably more stringent. That said, they may have leeway there as well.

How do I report someone who constantly gets out of trouble by flashing a volunteer fire fighter card?

Report them to your local regular fire department district chief or to the local law enforcement agency.
Be sure you have the name correct and why they are using this card , the circumstances.

Looking to volunteer at a local fire department…?

Posted by admin on December 3rd, 2009 and filed under volunteer fire | 1 Comment »

Question if anyone has or is volunteering at a department. I am interested in working with emergency civil services. Almost finish with college with a major that is towards law enforcement. Was looking into volunteering for a fire department has a way to begin being involved with emergency civil services. Worried that won’t be able to be committed as finishing up school. How does scheduling usually work? Thanks for the feedback.

Volunteering is a great way to start. depending on ur area, you will get trained and certified within a year. Its a great way to meet new people, ( i now call them my family :)) help the community and gain respect. and depending on ur area, My station requires 48 hours a month to be a member. could be more or could be less.

Do any fire departments have surplus equipment they want to donate to a rural volunteer fire department in TN?

Posted by admin on December 1st, 2009 and filed under volunteer fire | 1 Comment »

We are seeking donations of scbas, turnout gear, used extracation equipment, walkies from any department that has surplus equipment that they could donate to our department so that we could safely enter structure fires and work wrecks with entrapments in our area.
Your time and consideration is greatly appreciated.

A very noble attempt. Kudos. I believe this can be best pursued through a very active NGO in your area. And anything you do would surely take you to achieving the goal. Best wishes
