In the US, accreditation is not compulsory for religious schools to award religious Associate in Arts, Bachelor of Arts or Ph.D. A spiritual degree (AA, BA, MA, or Ph.D) is validated in US. Institutions offering purely religious academic degrees are free from from certifying prerequisites in many regions, subject to specific regulations in each area.

Some theology colleges choose to get certification in order to be recognized to give academic degrees versus religious degrees. There are many major accreditation authorities that specialize in orthodox religious educational institutions. These are the Association of Advanced Rabbinical and Talmudic Schools, the Association for Biblical Higher Education, the Association of Theological Schools in the United States and Canada, and the Transnational Association of Christian Colleges and Schools, Theology Degree and the American Board of Theological Institutions (ABTI).
