how does a fire department know if I have smoked marijuana or done illicit drugs in the past ten years?

An automatic disqualification for applicants looking for a job on Fire Rescue Departments is having smoked marijuana or done any illegal drugs in the last ten years. Seeing as how these drugs don’t stay in your system for that long, how would Fire Departments know otherwise.By the way, I have been clean for a good two years now.

Think of your hair like a time line. Pull a strand out and from the root to the tip is your time line.
In different sections of your hair will be different things you may or may not have put in your system

If you haven’t smoked in the last couple years, you are fine because they will only look back 90 days, the standard for hair tests. A lot of hair grows in the time of two years which means "clean" hair will be what they are testing.

  1. If they take a hair sample they can tell back about that far.

Otherwise, it’s sort of your word against theirs. However–they can request references, and if yours rat you out, you’re screwed.

  2. idk i guess they are referring to if you had any drug problems in the past 10 years (been arrested for it) or failed a drug test in the past ten years.

  3. you either disclose it or if you have an arrest record they may get it from there. Plus they may do background checks and speak with family and friends even old class mates

  4. One of the ways the know is that they ask. Same as the military. They ask and if later they find out you lied your in deep. They look at you as a liability if you do drugs especially those with long term effects.

As far as hair testing that is not always true but depending on how fast your hair grows and how often you do or do not cut your hair they can see evidence of a drug history in your hair. There are also many prescription drugs that may show up in your testing and it is important to know that to. Basically they want up standing citizens who are going to care and not put others at risk by life styles that can harm others.

The people that have been druggies are or at least have been less reliable in most cases than people that haven’t had drugs in there life. They also have to consider if you were to pick up that life style again it would probably be within ten years of use. You don’t hear of people who fall off the wagon after 25 years that often.

  5. most paid Fire departments use a polygraph a some point during the interview process, its hard to beat a polygraph, hair follicle testing only goes back about 9 mos
