After my sister's house survived the 2003 fires through sheer luck she replaced the roof with fire-resistant tiles, covered all exposed wood surfaces with stucco, and other measures - including installing a pipe with a fire department connection running from her swimming pool to the street. Several of her neighbors did the same thing with their swimming pools.

The availability of water is what caused the fire department to choose her street as the place to 'hold the line' against the fire.

Every house on her street was saved.
References :
I have a brother who works for the Forrest Service and told us exactly what critera firefighters use when deciding what homes to save and what to let burn.

What about all the people that refused to remove their dry brush? That's the homeowners fault. There is just so much the government can do.

I agree that the firefighters are true heroes!
References :
People are told to clear brush around their house and to build where there are fire hydrants and road access for fire trucks. But, when you are experience a severe drought and a stiff wind comes from the WRONG direction and a fire starts in tinder-dry brush, what would you suggest the Governator do? I don't like the man, never voted for him and think he is a really bad actor, but I wouldn't suggest he take a shovel and build a fire-break around every home in California. I don't like fires or earthquakes, but we don't have (usually) scary tornadoes, hurricanes or floods. I don't know where The Garden of Eden is, but California is closer to it than many other states!
References :
Yes yes, blame the government for lack of rain, dry conditions, and the santa ana winds. Also blame the government for any idiot that starts (by accident or on purpose) a fire in these conditions. Real bright thinker.

Here's some tips for you to help you in the future:

Don't build near or on the following:
Fault lines (basically all California is an earthquake trap).
Drought areas. Super dry conditions = fire hazard.
Gulf Coast. Katrina? Enough said.
Low level area in high water region. If you pour water into a bowl, where does it go? Duh !

I love how people blame the government for their stupidity.
