    I took this song as being how the state of the world is. Meaning our world has always had problems from the beginning but we do our best to try to straighten things out. The lines We didn’t start it but we try to fight it. At least that’s how I take it. It’s a great song.

    This song is not about the Cold War. That is actually just the background of the time period.

    No, think more along the lines of how headlines come out over time, and the Baby boomers ended up inheriting a lot of blame from the old generation, not unlike “generation X” label that young people had not too long ago.

    The “fire” is how events were in motion to create the state of the world, since the beginning, and will always be going until the world ends.

    Or at least that’s how I heard it.

    well I guess the flames represent the conflict of the cold war, the events and people represent the good and bad that came out during that era and all the while the fire follows them through the ages. I guess they are portraying the average people tryint to live their lives while the world could go at any minute, then the irony once it gets to 80s that this started at the end of WWII and yet the children of the upcoming generation will have to shoulder the consequences of the cold war.
