I survived the malibu fire. Are there any good fire retardants?

I am going to check with the local fire department. I want a thermal-gel I can hook up to a hose. I know that the fires will continue to come here!

TC is spot on! Our aggressive saving of natural forests has created a problem. For the last 50 years we have aggressively put out ALL fires as soon as possible. Smokey has informed you the you can prevent forest fires.

Well, we now have huge areas of woodland, with no cleared areas interspersed. This means when a fire does start during dry and windy conditions, the fires are enormous.

Had we let some of the previous fires burn a bit, there would be areas that would stop subsequent fires because there is no fuel.

I do know the DNR is realizing they made a mistake no letting nature take it’s course.

  1. Do you have a pool? There is a kind of sump-pump that you can install to keep your home wet during the fires. I saw a home on the news that was spared due to using the pump. Other then that, you should be clearing brush around your home and be weary of fire hazards.

  2. petition your state legislators to have managed harvesting of mature trees in the mountains around your home. Soon you will have a park like wooded area and no major fires, and lower taxes. Would you rather have your house safe, lower taxes, better use of natural resources, or Forrest fires?

  4. Supposedly there is a fire retardant gel that the Home Depot sells and is similar to what the fire department here in San Diego uses. Everytime I have checked since we had the Paradise/Cedar fires in 03, however, our Depot doesn’t have it. You are supposed to be able to use this stuff in a power washer and it turns to get once it hits a surface. My neighbor got some, but never had time in this fire to use it because the evacuations came in the middle of the night and you have to apply this right before the fires hit and it only lasts a few days to a week (he says). Then, you have to rinse it off or the sun will bake it to the house.

Glad to hear Malibu is doing better. We’re still watching our Witch fire…
