Can I become a fireman with a Drug Paraphernalia Conviction?
Hello, I am in the fire academy now, and I got caught with a "weed pipe" and sentenced September 1st 2009.
I am on probation for a year and the whole drug test etc etc… It is a misdemeanor.
I was wondering, After I go through my EMT/PARAMEDIC will i still be able to get a job as a career fireman?
There is no absolute "yes" or "no" answer to this question, Ryan. Some departments probably have hard-and-fast rules that would prohibit hiring you. Others will merely take it into consideration.
It is certainly a strike against you, but anyone who tells you that it will absolutely prevent you from becoming a fireman, anywhere, is making too strong a statement.
Recognize that attitudes toward marijuana vary greatly across our country. In California it is practically legal. In Salt Lake City, Utah, it is quite a different story.
In most states, misdemeanors can be expunged after five years of squeaky-clean living.
Good luck!
