What does it take to become a fireman?

I am about to transfer to a University, what is a good major to pick if I want to become a fireman? What what does it take to become a fireman?

Do I wait until I graduate to begin working? Do I have to go to a firesciece school? Do I need to be certified in anything?

What about physically, what shape do I need to be in?
